EPITAPH

To the memory of the deeply-lamented and much-esteemed
(whose heart was perfect with the L/rd)

STELLA
Widow of the late Chief Rabbi
The Rev. Dr. Raphael Meldola,
By her disconsolate son,
David Meldola
Rendered into English verse by Sampson Samuel, Esq.

Alas! For a dear Mother’s loss I sigh—
Dismay and sorrow agitate my sou;
Death lies in wait, his shafts unerring fly,
From their dark covert reach their destined goal.

Stella! Bright star! Whose pure and holy light
Serenely beamed on earth, with rays divine,
What though no more they gladden mortal sight,
Yet now, with Heaven’s enduring brightness shine!

Mother! Thy children and thy people’s pride!
Whose wisdom guided us in early youth,
Thy liberal hand the claims of want supplied,
Thy heart was steadfast in the Law of Truth!

Well hast thou laboured in this vale of strife,
That treasure gained, no change can e’er destroy;
Thy God vouchsafes to thee eternal life,
To dwell in regions of unfading joy!
